GRAZALEMA

In the province of Cádiz, Grazalema is located on the slopes of the mountain system that bears its name, in which the peaks of Pinar and San Cristóbal stand out. It has one of the highest rainfall rates on the peninsula, with an annual average that exceeds 2,200 liters/m².

In its term, the Guadalete and Tabizna rivers and several other sources are born that make up a system of rivulets and streams of great importance. Within the Ronda region, it constitutes an important high mountain system of unusual landscapes, with reserves of mountain goats and fir forests (abies pinsapo).

It has a very careful popular cuisine and is alaways worth a visit. It is a wonderful are for hiking and biking with great paths and trails. Grazalema is a livestock region with some gardens and a production of excellent cheeses, the demand for which is increasing, and the old wool industry is being revitalized, mainly with the making of blankets.

Even cited by French sources, it was a heroic city in the War of Independence, in which it resisted several sieges, until the almost annihilation of its defenders. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was one of the natural smuggling routes of the Rock of Gibraltar, and therefore a route for bandits and smugglers.

It has an important baroque parish church, with three naves with a dome in the transept, and another, called Aurora, made of stone, oval in shape, with a gallery and dome.

It has its festivities on July 16, Ntra. Señora del Carmen, and the fairs from August 23 to 26.
